Comedic play coming to Houston highlights Texas’ reign at Miss USA pageant in the 80s

Five women with the title of Miss Texas won the crown from 1985-1989

Houston – In an homage to Texas pride and pageantry, Texan playwright, Davis Gilbert introduces “ACES!” to MATCH.

It tells the true story of the lives of the legendary Miss USA winners from 1985 to 1989, affectionately known as the Texas Aces. No other state has been able to produce five title holders that went on to consecutively win the Miss USA title and crown, and place as top finalists in the Miss Universe pageant.

1985Laura Elena Martinez Harring was crowned Miss Texas USA and Miss USA.

1986Christy Fichtner was crowned Miss Texas USA and Miss USA.

1987Michelle Royer was crowned Miss Texas USA and Miss USA.

1988Courtney Gibbs was crowned Miss Texas USA and Miss USA.

1989Gretchen Polhemus was crowned Miss Texas USA and Miss USA.

Set against the backdrop of a fictional TV show, “ACES!” takes viewers 35 years after the crowning achievements of these iconic women. As they reunite on screen, they display laughter, love, and Texan charm with the help of champagne. Miss USA 1977 Kim Tomes is also portrayed in the show by actress Nora Hahn. She plays the host of the show. Hahn is joined by Pam Green, Audrey Coe, Amy Gustin Millin, Lisa Caughorn, and Kelly Swinehart as the ACES.

Although it’s set during a fictional TV show, many facts are included in “ACES!”, however, the reunion has not taken place…yet! Gilbert hopes to turn it into a musical next year with the goal of making it on Broadway.

After a successful run in Palm Springs, California, “ACES!” is heading to MATCH. The show will run from May 2 to May 5 with two showings on May 4. Buy your tickets here.
